While game drives in open 4x4 vehicles are available, the best way to experience this region is on foot or on a Mokoro (dug-out canoe). An abundance of elephant can be found in the area, however, guests can also expect to see a wide variety of general game, including, impala, lechwe, hippo, crocodile and lion.
Kanana camp is one of the few camps in the Okavango Delta to have an exclusive heronry where many migratory water birds come to have their young from July onwards. This is a very important nesting site for these birds and one of the few in the Delta. The birds you are likely to see roosting here are the yellow bill stork, marabou, open bill stork, darters cormorants and slate egrets. Kanana Camp is now regularly reporting sightings of the rare Pels fishing owl in addition to hyena, which has also become a rare sighting in this area. Even more rare are the Situanga, which live in swamps and are very good swimmers. They may take to the water to evade predators such as leopards or wild dogs.
