Serra Cafema
Serra Cafema is a luxurious camp situated in the enormous Hartmann Valley, overlooking the Kunene River. The area offers unique landscapes and magnificent views of the Namib Desert. Private and exclusive and perhaps one of the most remote places on the continent.
Serra Cafema Highlights
Serra Cafema is exclusive; situated on the banks of the Kunene River within the vast Hartmann Valley, surrounded by the Namib Desert. The Kunene River is the only water source in the region. The sound of water offers a peaceful atmosphere at the camp combined with breathtaking scenery and exciting activities by day. Serra Cafema is one of the most isolated and extraordinary destinations in all of Africa; an area that is shared with the fascinating Himba people, the last true semi-nomads in Africa.
- Extremely remote property set along the Kunene River
- Canvas raised chalets with thatched roofs
- Ovahimba families often visit the lodge and guests can learn more about their nomadic lifestyle
- Informative nature drives, guided quad bike excursions, boating, walking and Himba settlement visits are available
Serra Cafema Game Viewing and Activities
Game viewing around Serra Cafema is limited to herds of gemsbok, springbok and Hartmann's mountain zebra. The Kunene River offers a large population of Nile crocodiles, an irregularity in a desert. Burchell's Courser and Benguela Long-billed Lark are among the characteristic bird species to be found in this area. There are also a number of endemic reptiles, the desert chameleon being a particular specialty. Serra Cafema has excellent relationships with the local Himba villages and the regular guest visits to these villages are good examples of mutually beneficial and sensitive cultural tourism. A variety of activities are on offer which will allow guests the opportunity to explore the breathtaking region and includes informative nature drives as well as boating on the Kunene River, where crocodiles and water birds seem out of place in this moonscape environment. Walking in the remote mountain and river valleys are also a highlight, as is a visit to a Himba settlement, should the nomadic people be in the area. One of the highlights of Serra Cafema is the carefully guided quad bike excursions that tread lightly on the dunes, while allowing guests to experience a true desert. The fairy circle phenomenon is best viewed in the Hartmann's Valley.
