Kafue National Park is home to the Big 4 and is a prime safari destination in Zambia. African wild dog, cheetah, and a diverse array of antelope are frequently spotted while out on game drive. Avid birders are drawn to the area because of its impressive bird count of 478 unique species. Rare birds to spot include the Pel’s fishing-owl, African finfoot, and purple-crested turaco. While out on a sundowner boat cruise, guests are encouraged to look out for hippos and crocs that fill the waters. These aquatic beasts can also be spotted from the comfort of camp from one of the many viewing decks. Daily game drives led by local guides and take place dusk and dawn in sturdy 4x4 vehicles. For fisherman, a private guide will introduce you to the best spots to reel in species such as pike, barbel, and bream. Walking safaris are led by an armed scout, seasoned in the art of tracking big game. Being on foot is a completely immersive experience, and allows walkers to learn about the smaller aspects of nature. Bush breakfasts, special sundowner set-ups, and starlit dinners on the deck are the order of the day at Ila Safari Lodge.
