During the 1994 genocide, Hotel des Mille Collines sheltered over 1000 Tutsi refugees from the Hutu militia; an episode that was brought to the attention of the world in the movie Hotel Rwanda, which was filmed in South Africa. It is a four-star international hotel with 112 rooms, set in large gardens in downtown Kigali. After extensive renovations, the Mille Collines hotel is thriving. Though not Kigali’s swankiest hotel, its new rooms come with air conditioning and plasma-screen TVs, and its Panorama Restaurant is one of the cities finest.

Hotel des Mille Collines Activities
The fourth-floor restaurant, where waiters serve grilled fish as a jazz saxophonist plays, is also where guests can enjoy a panoramic view of Rwanda's tree-studded capital, Kigali. A visit to Kigali's new and insightful Genocide Museum is highly recommended. Not only does it detail the history of Rwanda's genocide, but also documents the history of genocide around the world, creating a very moving experience. The hotel offers the world famous swimming pool, a fitness room as well as a floodlit tennis court for some sporting action. A few minutes from the hotel is the Golf Club "Source du Nil", where keen golfers can enjoy a day out on the course. Based in Kigali, it is also possible to visit the famous mountain gorillas of Rwanda or take a tour of Kigali City. Different touristic sites include the Akagera National Park, the Nyungwe Forest, and the shores of the Lake Kivu or Lake Muhazi.
