Why I Love Going on Safari
I swapped city life for a sleepy town in 2015 and have never looked back! When I left Cape Town for the safari hub of Hoedspruit, I planted my African roots and my enthusiasm for safari and wildlife experiences continued to grow. With easy access to the Greater Kruger Park, I accumulated many game drives and bush walks, and the joy I found along those wild tracks continued to nurture my passion. Over the years, I've travelled in Africa more than anywhere else in the world because nowhere offers a greater feeling of contentment to my soul than seeing wide, open spaces and hearing only the sounds of nature. I consider myself lucky to know what it feels in the presence of elephants, to watch thunderstorms roll in and know that summer has arrived, and to look up and see a sky bright with stars.
My Best Sightings
One of the most highly anticipated safaris of my life was a journey to Uganda. I had never seen mountain gorillas and I was trying hard not to let my expectations sky-rocket because these great apes are wild, the jungle is thick, and there is no guaranteeing a sighting. Well, it turned out I could have increased my expectations tenfold and I still wouldn't have been disappointed! We got to spend a precious hour with a magnificent silverback who settled so close to me I could have touched him, many black-backed males, and even more females mothering their youngsters. One very curious and animated toddler really performed for our cameras, demonstrating an uncannily child-like behaviour. Cheeky, yet shy. This hour in July of 2017 stands out above the rest for me!
